Dr. Ryan Dunlop is a Harvard-trained dentist, implant clinician, educator, and pioneer in digital full-arch reconstruction. After graduating from Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 2006, he completed two years of postgraduate training in New York City before establishing his career in Fresno, California.

As the founder and CEO of Full Arch Masters, Dr. Dunlop has helped educate thousands of dental professionals in advanced implant surgery, digital workflows, and full-arch prosthetic rehabilitation. His clinical approach incorporates technologies such as photogrammetry, intraoral scanning, CAD/CAM, and 3D printing to streamline treatment and facilitate same-day full-arch restorations.

An internationally recognized lecturer, Dr. Dunlop combines extensive clinical experience with a passion for innovation and education.

Representing the Blue Corner as “The BiZ,” Dr. Dunlop enters the SmartOnX BIZNIZ! Championship Debate to defend tilted implant placement, subcrestal positioning, and contemporary approaches to full-arch reconstruction against Dr. Gerald Niznick's more traditional implant philosophy.

DMD, MSD · Prosthodontist · Founder, Core-Vent, Implant Direct & Paragon Implant Company · 30+ U.S. implant patents
Full bio

Dr. Gerald Niznick is one of the most influential innovators in the history of modern dental implantology. A prosthodontist, inventor, entrepreneur, and educator, Dr. Niznick has spent more than four decades shaping the design, manufacture, and clinical application of dental implants.

After graduating from the University of Manitoba College of Dentistry in 1966, he pursued advanced prosthodontic training at the University of Southern California and earned his master's degree in prosthodontics from Indiana University.

In 1982, Dr. Niznick founded Core-Vent Corporation, launching a series of implant innovations that helped transform implant dentistry. His development of the Screw-Vent implant and its internal conical connection contributed significantly to modern implant design. He subsequently founded Implant Direct, revolutionizing implant distribution through innovative packaging, streamlined manufacturing, and affordable pricing. In 2022, he returned to the industry with Paragon Implant Company, continuing his pursuit of innovative, cost-effective implant systems.

With more than 30 U.S. dental implant patents, numerous professional honors, and a legacy of educating thousands of clinicians worldwide, Dr. Niznick has earned recognition as the “Godfather of American Implant Dentistry.” His contributions were further honored in 2018 when the University of Manitoba named its dental school the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry.

Representing the Red Corner as “The NiZ,” Dr. Niznick enters the SmartOnX BIZNIZ! Championship Debate to defend straight implant configurations, supracrestal implant positioning, and the biomechanical and restorative principles underlying his approach to full-arch reconstruction.

Facing Dr. Ryan Dunlop's contemporary tilted-implant philosophy, Dr. Niznick brings decades of engineering innovation, clinical research, and industry experience to a championship confrontation of competing treatment philosophies.

The fight card

Twelve rounds, one question

Every round helps answer the same question: Which implant philosophy provides the most predictable, maintainable, biologically stable, and prosthetically successful full-arch restoration?

BIZNIZ! fight card poster listing the twelve rounds.
  1. Opening philosophiesThe two primary disagreements, stated plainly.
    01
    Tilted vs. Straight Implants
Does tilting posterior implants improve full-arch biomechanics and anatomical utilization, or introduce unnecessary complexity?
    Dunlop opens
    02
    Subcrestal vs. Supracrestal Placement
Where should the implant platform be positioned to maximize crestal bone stability, soft-tissue health, and long-term restorative access?
    Niznick opens
  2. Biological & engineering evidenceSurface design, connections, bone stability, load distribution and fixation.
    03
Implant Surface: Rough vs. Machined Collar
Should microtextured surfaces extend to the implant platform, or should the coronal 2–3 mm remain machined to accommodate soft-tissue exposure and potential remodeling?
    Dunlop opens
    04
    Platform Switching and Implant–Abutment Connections
Which connection geometry and platform relationship best protect marginal bone and minimize mechanical complications?
    Niznick opens
    05
    Crestal Bone Remodeling and Peri-Implantitis
Do implant depth, collar texture, and exposure to the oral environment meaningfully alter the risk and consequences of peri-implant disease?
    Dunlop opens
    06
    Anterior–Posterior Spread and Cantilevers
Are tilted posterior implants the best way to increase A–P spread and shorten cantilevers, or can straight implant configurations achieve comparable load distribution?
    Niznick opens
    07
Implant Length, Diameter, and Primary Stability
Does maximizing available bone through tilted or longer implants improve fixation, or are shorter, appropriately sized straight implants equally predictable?
    Dunlop opens
  3. Clinical executionAnatomy management, prosthetic design, immediate loading and complications.
    08
    Bone Grafting vs. Anatomical Avoidance
Is it preferable to graft or augment for ideal straight implant placement, or to tilt implants around the sinus, mental foramen, and other anatomical limitations?
    Niznick opens
    09
    Prosthetic Emergence and Hygiene Access
How do implant angulation, platform depth, and abutment selection affect restorative contours, cleansability, and maintenance?
    Dunlop opens
    10
    Angled Abutments and Screw-Joint Mechanics
Do angled multi-unit abutments introduce meaningful mechanical disadvantages, or reliably compensate for tilted implant placement?
    Niznick opens
    11
    Immediate Loading and Full-Arch Conversion
Which philosophy offers the most predictable immediate provisionalization, passive fit, and stability during early healing?
    Dunlop opens
  4. Championship roundBoth fighters defend their approach against the strongest long-term evidence.
    12
    Long-Term Outcomes: The Evidence Verdict
When survival, marginal bone loss, biological complications, prosthetic maintenance, and total treatment burden are considered, which philosophy is better supported?
    Niznick opens

Fair-fight note: these approaches aren't always mutually exclusive. Straight implants can be placed subcrestally and tilted implants can have supracrestal platforms, and surface texture, connection design and bone remodeling depend on many factors. The moderator will press each fighter to separate evidence from preference and from implant-system claims.
